Preparing for launch

I’m promoting a weekly event featuring the very best of Jersey’s young bands and DJs. It will take place every Friday evening starting on 1st August. That means there’s just three weeks to go before the inaugural showcase.

I’ve also asked Jonny, of the band Moog, to assist. His knowledge of the local scene is exhaustive and his wealth of experience playing to crowds in many venues around the island will be an invaluable resource. I am hoping he’ll be taking to the stage, too, in one or another of his musical guises.

I’ve taken the step of setting up this blog to serve not only as a notice board for lineup announcements and things of that sort but, by making each DJ and band member who takes part a contributing author, also an interesting community of musical networking and gossip.

It’s my hope that new contributors to this website will quickly become familiar with the conventions of blogging on the wordpress.com platform. It’s really very simple yet powerful too. A toolkit of services above the post-writing window allows authors to upload pictures directly to the hosts’ server. Pictures, audio and video in external addresses can be linked to just as easily.

If you’re reading this and I’ve already made you a contributing editor, or you feel you could be one, please feel free to contact me with any question regarding the using of the blogging software. I trust it is straightforward enough, though, for you to just play around with and discover things. The forums and FAQ section are a very comprehensive archive of information about taking part in a group blog.

I’m not going to impose any strict moderation policy. New posts can be submitted without delay. Encourage your friends, fans or complete strangers to visit the site, bookmark or subscribe, and of course add comments to the posts. You will have the right to alter or add to other contributors’ posts and comments, and that privilege must be enacted with great care.

You’ll be given a login name and password and that’s all you need to start posting to the site. Before that can happen, though, you’ll have to give me your email address, a picture to be used as an avatar, and your preferred name. WordPress.com blogs can get pretty busy so I strongly advise against posting personal information such as phone numbers and email addresses unless you want to contend with a deluge of spam. You can phone me, email me or skype me with questions you may have about wordpress.com, or better still, leave a comment on one of my posts or start a new thread.

The first meeting of musicians and DJs in preparation for launch night will take place at the club today, Tuesday, 15th July, at 7pm. I’ve invited members of The Exchange and Dirtytrades, and also DJ Pip. I was hoping Jonny could make it but, alas, he’s busy so I’ll have a coffee with him on Saturday and we can hatch some plans then.

There are a great many truly excellent bands in the island and I hope that in the coming weeks and months we’ll be able to bring them to the attention of a wider and keener audience than ever before. The Havana Club is an excellent venue with one of the finest sound systems in St. Helier. The man who usually controls the mixing desk, Justin Vooles, better known as drummer with local musical heroes The Author, will be filling that role for our nights.

This series of nights is an attempt not to artificially represent but simply to allow the bands and bass scene of Jersey to be whatever it can be given the dedication of passionate technicians, performers and promoters.
